  • Sharad Sriwastawa joined Rakuten in 2018 as head of Radio Access Network and replaced Tariq Amin as CTO in 2022.

  • Sriwastawa has close to 30 years experience in the telecoms industry.

  • Sriwastawa is part of O-RAN ALLIANCE board and seems like he was hired by Tariq Amin.

  • Kazuhiro Suzuki was Rakuten’s Group Senior Managing Executive Officer, a role he has held since March 2022.

  • Unlike Sriwastawa, there is no much information about Kazuhiro Suzuki.

My assessment of him

  • Sriwastawa’s rise to senior management was swift. That could either be due to his relationship with Tariq or experience level. But I think it’s the later given that he sounds knowledgeable. Mikitani also praised Sriwastawa while announcing his appointment. I am not sure what to make of Kazuhiro Suzuki given that there is no much information about his achievements.

1&1 hikes prices of fibre optic tariffs, except the 50 tariff by more than 5 euros per month.

  • In an interview with FAZ, CEO Ralph Dommermuth said there are now 100 active antenna locations, up from 60 in November but lower than their 200 target.

"There are now around 100 active locations. We want to be at 200 in February. The bottleneck when setting up radio networks is the availability of mast locations, which we have now overcome. Laying fiber optics and connecting antennas is, above all, hard work. We have thousands of antennas in stock. " Dommermuth said.

  • However, they were able to hit their target of 1,000 for passive antennas and still expects to achieve their 2,000 target for 2024.

“At the end of the year we had 1,055 locations and thus reached our adjusted goal of 1,000 with passive infrastructure,” he said. “We have currently ordered a total of 5,000 locations and have started the new year well. I think we will have more than 2,000 additional cell towers by the end of the year.”

  • He pointed out that since December they have gained 260,000 new customers and the transition to the new network has been smooth.

“We’re doing well. Since December, 260,000 new contracts have been won and these customers have access to the new network. The next step is about moving our 12 million existing customers step by step. This has just begun. So far we have not received any significant complaints,” he said.

  • 1&1 CEO Ralph Dommermuth said in an interview with the International Club of Frankfurt Economic Journalists (ICFW) that they are targetting to have 1,350 antenna sites at the end of March 2024.

  • He added that they have signed lease contracts for another 750 sites on rooftops and other viable deployment locations.

  • Dommermuth pointed out that the primary bottleneck is the connection of masts to fibre networks.

  • In the interview, Dommermuth signalled that the subsidiaries could be made independent or United Internet could be scaled down.

“The aim is to hand over a company that is easier to manage ”, Dommermuth said

Assessment
1&1 wants to add 2,000 antenna sites at the end of 2024, hence addition of 350 antenna sites at the end of Q1 will be below the 500 quarterly average. But maybe they plan to scale up in the coming quarters. This just tells us that we have to remain cautious on its antenna sites plans.

Here are the costs associated with building the antenna location, according to CEO Ralph Dommermuth;

  • A radio mast on a building would cost 100,000 euros while a tower will cost up to 500,000 euros depending on the height.
  • The antennas cost around 100,000 euros.
  • Renting a rooftop location would cost between 500 and 1,000 euros per month.
  • Every meter of the fiber optic laid also costs money. He couldn’t give a specific price.

  • Ralph Dommermuth reiterated that they need low band frequencies to economically operate the network.

“Without commercially available frequency equipment, every additional antenna we build would mean losses,” he said in an interview with Tagespiegel.

  • He pointed out that they are open to renting the spectrum from the other operators.

  • He said that he’s still energetic to run the business.

" I am 60 years old and was asked at an event whether there was already a succession plan. That’s not the case. I enjoy working and my tasks challenge me. The job is still a lot of fun, but of course it can’t last forever. So something will change at some point. Maybe in three, five or seven years – that’s what needs to be decided if the question really arises."

1&1-Chef Dommermuth ĂŒber Mobilfunkfrequenzen: „Telekom, Vodafone und TelefĂłnica wollen unter sich bleiben“.
