US economy added fewer jobs than expected in January, unemployment rate fell to 4% from 4.1%
- The US economy added 143,000 jobs in January, down from 307,000 in December (revised upwards from 256,000) and below the 169,000 estimate.
- Unemployment rate moved down to 4.0% against expectations for it to stay steady at 4.1%.
- Labor force participation rate rose to 62.6% from 62.5%.
- Average hourly earnings rose to 0.5% on the month versus expectations to remain unchanged at 0.3%.
- In a yearly basis, average hourly earnings was steady at 4.1% (previous month was revised up from 3.9%), above 3.8% estimate.
- Futures were little changed following the report.
