Consumer price index rose 0.2% in September, more than expected; annual rate fell to 2.4% from 2.5% in August

  • Core CPI rose 0.3% in September, unchanged from the previous month but above 0.2% estimate.
  • On a yearly basis, core CPI grew 3.3% versus expectations to remain steady at 3.2%.
  • Headline CPI rose 0.2% on the month, unchanged from the previous month but above 0.1% estimate.
  • On a yearly basis, headline CPI was up 2.4%, down from 2.5% in August but above 2.3% estimate.
  • Supercore inflation rose 0.404% in September versus 0.327% in August, driven by transportation services and medical care services.
  • Nasdaq 100 futures slipped 0.6%, S&P 500 futures shed 0.4% while Dow Jones futures were down 0.2% following the report.
