- According to industry sources Rakuten is to be blamed for the network outage at 1&1 in May 2024.
- The sources said 1&1 is seeking compensation in the high double-digit millions.
Some 1&1 users reported network disruption in April 11 and March 13
- Around 10,000 1&1 users across Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, and Munich reported service disruptions in April 11.
- This followed another network disruption in March 13.
- Such network disruptions are not good for 1&1 especially considering it has to improve its image following the massive network outage in May.

1&1 customers experienced internet disruption on May 26th to May 28th caused by a software issue. The software was being integrated with 1&1’s Open RAN network.

There was a short-lived major network disruption at 1&1 today

1&1 network was disrupted between 11:35 a.m. and 11:50 a.m across major cities in Germany.

Around 18,800 complaints were submitted, compared to the usual 35 at this time.

A test by Chip and Net Check finds 1&1 network better than feared

A recent test by Chip Magazine and network testing company Net Check on 1&1 network found that the network is not as bad as most people feared but ranks below that of incumbents.
"The network is better than many think. However, it is not yet on par with the networks of the three established network operators, " the test concluded.

The test found that roaming in Vodafone network is “normal” in most cases i.e. around 88% of internet browsing tests and 90% of phone calls were made in roaming mode but this is likely to change next year when “bidirectional handover” begins and when 1&1 gets the low-band frequencies.

The success rate of phone calls in cities was 98.23%, which was acceptable but below expectations (99.5%).

The success rate of a 10 MB file download was 99.23% in cities, which was considered “quite good” but below the preferable 99.5% but downloads worked exceptionally well directly on the 1&1 network, achieving a success rate of 99.67.

Downloads using 1&1 network in cities achieved a success rate of 97.2% while using Vodafone roaming achieved a success rate of 98.7%.

Chip and Net Check pointed out that the test was “comparable to our large-scale mobile network test, which we conduct annually.”

“While 1&1 is still technically an exception, the solid results demonstrate that the provider is now a serious market player. Moreover, its marketing reflects this, and users perceive it as such,” IMTEST said.
