This topic will be use to discuss Volkswagen’s performance in the electric front as well as its upcoming EV models.
- Volkswagen’s BEV sales rose by 48% year-over-year to 321,600 vehicles in H1 2023.
- However, deliveries to China fell by around 2% year-over-year to 62,400 vehicles.
- Volkswagen Group plans to launch a number of models by 2026. However, only specifications of seven models have been given in detail.
- These models are expected to ouperform their competitors when it comes to features, if not come close to them.
- ID.2all, Cupra Raval and Cupra Tavascan are expected to be cheaper than their rivals while ID.7, EV Macan, Audi Q6 e-tron, and Audi A6-etron are expected to be more expensive.
- Even though, Audi Q6 e-tron and Audi A6-etron will be produced in 2024, I expect the production level to peak in 2025 when Changchun plant, with an annual capacity of 150,000 units and dedicated for the two models, would have been completed.
What do you mean by outform the competitors? Competitors’ current models? Or the ones they also have in plans?
I would say both since these models are also improvements of existing models. For instance;
- ID.7 features come close to those of Tesla Model 3 while ID.2all is expected to outperform Renault Zoe R135 and Fiat New 500.
- Audi A6-etron is expected to outperform Mercedes-Benz EQE Sedan and come close to Tesla Model S hatchback.
- Audi Q6 e-tron features are expected to beat those of Tesla Model Y and BMW ix3.
- CUPRA Raval is expected to outperform Fiat New 500 while Cupra Tavascan is seen to outperform Ford Mustang Mach E premium.
- The upcoming EV Macan will be sportier and more powerful compared to the more advanced ICE Macan GTS and will come close to Taycan, if not better.
- Volkswagen deliveries of all-electric vehicles rose by 40.5% year-over-year to 209,900 in Q3 2023.
- Percentage of BEVs to total deliveries rose to 9.0% in Q3 from 7.7% in Q2.
- BEV deliveries to Chinese customers rose 11.0% y/y to 54,700 in Q3.
-
The growth in deliveries by 45% y/y in the first nine months of 2023 was mainly due to many oustanding orders from the previous year.
-
Audi sales manager Hildegard Wortmann said there is clear reluctance to buy electric vehicles.
“As the general market development falls short of expectations, our order intake is below our ambitious targets,” he said.

- CEO Oliver Blume said a 20,000 euro EV could come in the second half of 2025.
“We have a responsibility to bring the right products at the right price onto the market,” Blume said.
“After early adopters were reached with electric cars, we now need consumers to be convinced by the technology, who don’t have the opportunity to install a charging station at home.”

Ralf Brandstaetter, CEO of Volkswagen China, said the company is developing a new platform designed specifically for producing entry-level electric models for Chinese customers.
-
The new platform, known as the A Main Platform is derived from modular electric drive matrix (MEB) and will use local products; hence lowering the development costs.
-
A Main Platform should be ready by 2026, a third faster than the previous platform development times.
-
Ludger Luehrmann, chief technology officer of Volkswagen Group China Technology Company (VCTC) said they were able to lower their price of dashboard displays by 37% after switching to a Chinese supplier from a global one.
-
Brandstaetter said Volkswagen plans to develop four new models priced between 140,000 yuan ($19,400) and 170,000 yuan on the new platform.
“We will increase the efficiency of our development processes and be able to shorten the time it takes to bring products to Chinese customers by 30%, while ensuring we are catering to their specific needs,” Brandstaetter said.

Handelsblatt has reported that Volkswagen is interested in cooperating with Renault on an EV platform that would make the vehicles affordable.
-
The platform would produce 200,000 to 250,000 vehicles annually.
-
Volkswagen declined to comment on the report but a Renault spokesperson said the cooperations were needed.
“We are in different discussions but nothing has been finalised,” said the spokesperson.
-
Last month, Renault launched its new EV Twingo, called Legend that’s priced at less than 20,000 euros.

- Audi CEO Gernot Doellner told Handelsblatt that the brand’s EV profit margins will take longer to be on par with that of its ICE models.
- Audi planned to reach margin parity by the end of the decade.

Volkswagen, Audi, Porche and Scout Motors Brands will implement Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) in their electric vehicles, starting in 2025.
-
Volkswagen Group of America said the agreement will give customers access to more than 15,000 additional charging points.
-
Volkswagen Group said in July 2023 that it was in talks with Tesla to give customers access to
NACS, joining other automakers such as Ford and General Motors. -
By using NACS, automakers would save on costs dedicated to construction of charging points.
“We think we can save up to $400 million in the original three-quarters of a billion dollars that we allocated to this, because we’ve been able to do it faster and more effectively,” General Motors CEO, Mary Barra, said in an interview with CNBC.

- Market Perform, €124: Analyst Daniel Roeska of Bernstein Research forecasts the end of government subsidies will push up EV prices by 6 to 17%; hence lowering their demand even if automakers are helping their customers.
- He forecasts that the end of subsidies will cost automakers 3 billion euros.

- The prices of used EVs are falling faster than that of ICE vehicles due to a lack of subsidies, limited charging infrastructures, a desire to wait for better technology and rising borrowing costs which makes them expensive.
- Problems with the $1.2 billion secondhand EVs market can destroy billions of dollars in earnings for the leasing industry, according to Christian Dahlheim, head of Volkswagen Financial Services.
- The problems are expected to rise next year when many of the 1.2 million EVs sold in 2021 will enter the secondhand market.
- Prices for used cars declined by around a third in the year through October, higher than a 5% decline in the overall used market, according to sales data from IseeCars.com, a car and dealer ranking website.

Powercore’s battery cell developed with QuantumScape only witnessed 5% storage capacity loss after 1,000 charging cycles (equivalent to 500,000 kilometres on the road), exceeding industry targets of 700 charging cycles and a maximum loss of 20% capacity.
“These are very encouraging results,” PowerCo head Frank Blome said. “The final result of this development could be a battery cell that enables long ranges, can be charged super-quickly and practically does not age.”

- Thomas Schafer CEO Volkswagen Passenger Cars told auto motor and sport that they will push the mass production of ID 2 all EV to May 2026 from the planned 2025 due to decision by European countries not to ugrade the existing Euro 6 emissions limits for cars and the desire to reduce costs.
- He added that only 80% of the planned sales volume for new vehicles will be produced.
- Schafer pointed out that Volkswagen has overcapacity after new orders fell last year.
