Retail sales volumes in the euro area fell by 0.2% in July from June and were 1.0% lower year-on-year. That compared with average forecasts in a Reuters poll of economists of a 0.1% monthly decline and a 1.2% drop from a year earlier.
The monthly percentage change for June 2023 has been revised from -0.3% to +0.2% in the euro area and from -0.2% to +0.2% in the EU. The annual percentage change has been revised from -1.4% to -1.0% in the euro area and from -1.6% to -1.1% in the EU.
Germany had a -0.8 m/m and -2.2 y/y.
Big miss on Eurozone retail sales, weakness has certainly accelerated in Q3.
- In August 2023, the seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade decreased by 1.2% in the euro area and by 0.9% in the EU, compared with July 2023.
- In August 2023 compared with August 2022, retail sales index decreased by 2.1% in the euro area and by 2.0% in the EU.
- Economists polled by Reuters had expected a 0.3% month fall and a 1.2% year-on-year decline.
