Decision: Discourse Advantages

Hi Guys,

what is your first impression about Discourse? Do you have any ideas what we should implement or improve?

Key reasons:

  • Accessibility: Easy accessibility for everyone, even without a Discord account + SEO friendly
  • Flexibility: Everyone can start new topics. (Please do that ;-)) Topics are clearly separated.
  • Persistency. Discussions in Discourse are more persistent because readers start at the top not the button.
  • Clarity: Active topics are at the top. Indications who responded last, statistics which topics have the most views and replies.
  • Scope. Large topics e.g. “Spotify” can be broken down into a lot of topics that can be discussed in detail separately.

Since setting up the Forum I already realized four additional advantages I did not think about before:

  1. Mobile-friendly when writing. Unlike in Discord, there is a large input field which makes writing longer replies way easier.

  2. Ability to separate topics. Once in a while, a new discussion topic arises from a different conversation. In Discourse it is possible to split those new conversations into standalone topics. This enables continuity on the original topic, room for the new topic, and a good overview and reading process for the visitor.

  3. Discourse is backed up automatically. You never have to worry that your thoughts and work will be lost.

  4. Email notifications are great to get more engagement in topics.

  5. Every Wiki article has the ability to have its own discussion topic (if needed). Discussions & articles can be cross-linked.

  6. Easier adjustability between public and non-public topics.

  7. Better readability of topics! A clear focus on reading and not so much “distraction/noise” on the side of the screen with a lot of different discord channels.

  8. Spellchecker like Grammarly can be directly integrated and work well.

  9. Easier to catch up as discussed topics are more clear?

  10. Tags to finds topics

  11. Message people based on replies.

  12. Better Link usage. Links can be embedded into post.

  13. Way more accessibility when following links to Forum posts compared to following links to old Discord messages. (Easy to access)

  14. Discourse Links offer automatical embedded previews of the content.

Do you already have some Feedback? I am interested in having an potential transition rather sooner than later.

Importantly: Are you seeing any reasons not to migrate?

@Magaly @Aron what are your thoughts? Are there any additional tests you think you or we need to conduct in order to get a better understanding of Discourse or do you see areas of worry or concern?

I am thinking about tagging everyone in Discord and asking them about their opinions as well but would like to get some internal feedback first.

Even though I just started testing it by making posts, so far I like everything about it.

I like that it looks way more flexible, and interactions easier. But I don’t think I have used it enough to be able to spot a problem that could arise
But between Discord and this, I think this one wins for sure, and also the fact is more accessible

Instead of migrating everything at once we could start slowly by migrating first topics e.g. the Upwork topic. Thoughts?

@Magaly @Aron i’ve missed your likes here. (Need to get better watching for “Like notifications” in Discourse)

Ok then let’s start with switching conversations of some of our more active channels like maybe Upwork and Meta.
