Fair points. What are the current price points of Chinese cars? I found some research of Aron that it is €30,000 on average according to KPMG in Europe. Do we have a breakdown of best selling EV models and their price points? (Both internationally and in Europe)
I have not found a full list with prices comparing both regios.
But obviously, prices will depend on the type of model.
From the videos I saw on BYD, they have a large range of models for all preferences, and their cheapest model starts at $9,698, but they do have some other very cheap models.
List of BYD prices (don’t know about their accuracy): BYD Car Prices Europe | BYD New Cars Model 2023 - Ccarprice EUR
Some comparisons I found (Prices probably a bit cheaper now, with the discounts done since last year):
BYD Dolphin
In Europe: €28,990
In China: 116,800 yuan (€15,200)
MG ZS
In Europe: €31,310
In China: 119,800 yuan (€15,600)
BMW iX3
In Germany: €67,300
In China: 405,000 yuan (€51,800)
- According to S$P14 million vehicles sold in 2023 EV’s global market share increased to 16.5%, up from 13% in 2022 and 2.5% in 2019.
- EV’s market penetration increased in China and the U.S. but remained flat at 22% across the EU15 countries. Attribute that to a still material EV/ICE premium and a relative scarcity of lower-priced models.
- EV sales growth rates remain solid across Europe, China, and the U.S. in early 2024, though slower compared to the spike over 2020-2021.
- EV pricing dynamics, the margin dilutive effect of electric powertrains for most of legacy OEMs, and the market distortive profile of subsidies could weigh on motivation to push EV sales. That will likely lead to stable (at best) or declining EV market share in the U.S. and Europe.
- Conversely, in China, we believe that pricing parity and the large range of models at every price segment will continue to pressure sales of traditional powertrains and support increasing EV adoption.

- Germany’s Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), is considering introducing a 6,000 euros bonus for switching from a combustion vehicle to an EV.
- They are also considering introducing a 3,000 euros bonus for switching to a used EV.
Price for lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, battery cells in China has dropped 51% to an average of $53 per kilowatt-hour.
Raw material costs, overcapacity and margin compression from manufacturers account for the bulk of the price declines
Pack-level prices for the most-sold battery chemistries have been below the often-referenced $100/kWh benchmark in China since October 2023, and LFP pack prices are now at $75/kWh
At that price, EVs can be priced at or below combustion cars in most vehicle segments
Battery-electric vehicles are currently the cheapest drivetrain by average transaction price in the country, even after stripping out mini city cars from the dataset.
Almost two-thirds of EVs available in China are already cheaper than their internal combustion engine equivalents, and many cheaper electric models are planned for launch outside China in 2025 and 2026.
