Meta’s MSL releases its first LLM called Muse Spark
- Meta’s internal benchmark tests show Muse Spark outperformed Google’s Gemini on some tests and was competitive with models from OpenAI and Anthropic on others.
- Meta said the model is “an early data point on our trajectory,” with several larger models in development.
- A Meta executive told Bloomberg that the model is good at answering questions about science, health and math, but weaker at coding.
- Meta doesn’t have plans to release the model widely via API.
Assessment
Meta Platforms shares rose 6.5% yesterday. While the market was generally up, the release of Muse Spark likely supported the rise in Meta shares. I think the market mainly cheered the earlier-than-expected release of Muse Spark, following reports indicating that it may be delayed.
Early reviews are mixed, but all suggest Muse Spark is a credible contender among top models (Notion). However, I think the key takeaway is the trajectory. If Muse Spark is already competitive, it suggests that upcoming models could be significantly more impressive.
