EU Commission opens probe on Meta Platforms regarding its new AI integration in WhatsApp

The EU Commission has opened probe into Meta Platforms saying they suspect Meta’s new policy on AI may breach EU competition rules.
Meta’s new WhatsApp policy blocks third-party AI providers from using the WhatsApp Business API if AI is their main service, while Meta AI remains allowed, raising self-preferencing concerns.
The European Commission fears this may exclude rival AI assistants from a dominant messaging platform and potentially constitute abuse of dominance (Article 102).
The investigation covers the entire EEA except Italy, which is running its own case.
No deadline exists; the probe is prioritized and fits into the EU’s broader scrutiny of AI market competition.
